| 3/30/04 8:34:53 AM: Construction in Shanghai is ridiculous. The city is one huge construction site. Out of any window higher then five stories you can always count at least a half dozen cranes, and usually a lot more. There is 24 hour activity. Migrant workers come from the backwoods provinces for these projects, and don't go home to their families until the work is completed. They usually get paid at the end of the project, so there is motivation to work 18 hours a day, seven days a week, for over a year before being able to go back home to their families. You can see the little shantytown boxes that they live in, but many workers sleep in the buildings. I think I like getting paid $18 an hour "teaching English" than this kind of work... |
